First report of Heterodera glycines on soybean in Ohio

Soybean-cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines Ichinohe) was found in August 1987 on the soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivar Williams 82 growing in Sandusky County in north-central Ohio. The field had been cropped to soybean every growing season since 1983. Soybeans had not grown well in some areas of the field for the previous two growing seasons. In 1987, the overall yield was estimated to be 10-15 bu/acre below field potential. In the most heavily infested fields (550 J2 stage H. glycines per 100 cubic centimeters of soil), the crop failed completely. In a brief survey of the surrounding area, 15 other farms were found to be infested with soybean-cyst nematode. At the present time, the known infestation involves about 404 ha (1000 acres) of sandy loam soil. Shortly after the initial find, H. glycines was found on soybean in Scioto County in south-central Ohio. Fixed specimens of the initial (Sandusky County) population are on deposit in the USDA Nematode Collection, Beltsville, MD. H. glycines has been found previously in Ohio in soil accompanying southern-grown tomato transplants. We believe this is the first report of H. glycines in Ohio on soybean
