Estimated crops losses in pigeon pea caused by the pod borer complex
Extensive field surveys were carried out in 44 districts of Uttar Pradesh, India, from 1978-79 to 1983-84. Pod samples of pigeon pea collected from 483 farmers' fields were examined to assess the damage caused by lepidopteran borers (Heliothis armigera, Exelastis atomosa, Lampides boeticus, etc.), podfly (Melanagromyza obtusa); bruchids (Callosobruchus spp.) and others (mainly hemipteran bugs). On average nearly 77 and 92 percent of fields had more than 5 percent grain damage resulting from lepidopteran borers and podfly respectively, which can be considered a threshold level for insecticide use
