Gamma irradiation as a quarantine treatment for Florida grapefruit infested with Caribbean fruit fly, Anastrepha suspensa, (Loew)

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macf.) were infested with immature stages (eggs and larvae) of Caribbean fruit fly, Anastrepha suspensa, (Loew). Following infestation, the fruit were transported to a commercial cobalt-60 irradiator operated by Neutron Products, Inc. in Dickerson, MD. There, lots of fruit in 4/5 bu cardboard cartons were irradiated (36 fruit/box) at several doses of gamma irradiation from 43 to 415 Gy. After treatment, the fruit were returned to Miami, Flawhere they were held in post treatment towers to evaluate the effects of the various levels of irradiation on the insect yield. No viable adult flies were recovered from any of the treatments, and very few larvae survived to pupate when irradiated at the 150 Gy range
