Implementation of microcomputer packages in epidemiologic/economic evaluations of animal health programs

Two canned microcomputer packages were used to demonstrate potential aids available in animal health economics. These packages permit the construction of 3 programs, or models: (1) epidemiologic, (2) decision-tree analysis, and (3) benefit-cost (BC) analysis. The epidemiologic model permits estimation of incidence and prevalence rates, assuming presence or absence of control/eradication alternatives. Once outcomes are determined from the epidemiologic model, monetary outcomes for sequential decision problems may be calculated using the decision-tree model. Combined with the BC model, the economic impact of the alternatives may be evaluated, using standard acceptance criteria. All programs used contain graphics routines which facilitate conceptualization and presentation of results. In addition, models may be run as either deterministic or stochastic processes, generating expected results as well as information necessary to evaluate alternatives using risk criteria
