Susceptibility of cattle to bovine leukemia virus infection associated with BoLA type

Holstein and Guernsey dairy cattle were studied prospectively for 3 years in one herd to determine if the age at which they seroconverted to bovine leukemia virus (BLV) was associated with their BoLA type. Life table measures and analyses suggested that Holstein cattle with BoLA DA8.2 were more likely to become infected with BLV than those with DA6.1 or DA8.1 (Breslow and Mantel-Cox p-values were 0.009, 0.035 and 0.025, 0.068, respectively). Guernsey cattle with BoLA DA25 were less likely to become infected with BLV than those with DA6.2 or da12.1 (Breslow and Mantel-Cox p-values were 0.174, 0.041 and 0.070, 0.017, respectively). Differences among BoLA types appeared in Holstein cattle less than 4 years of age, and in Guernsey cattle more than 3.5 years of age, suggesting an interaction between BoLA-associated susceptibility, age and breed
