Monitoring of pesticide residues in Taiwan

Studies to examine the residue levels of some chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides in the paddy soil, total mercury and arsenic content of paddy soil revealed the following: 1) the differences in mercury levels between different geographical locations were very small, ranging from 0.01 to 0.78 ppm and the mercury contents of rice grown on these soils were all below the detection limit; 2) the average arsenic content was found to be 8.22 ppm in the top 5 inches, 14.07 ppm in the second 5 inches, and 18.85 ppm in the third 5 inches of soil. Arsenic residue in the soil was translocated into the rice plants and the residual levels in the unpolished rice increased with the increase of arsenic residual levels in the soil. An analysis of rice grain samples showed the presence of detectable amount of arsenic with higher levels in the second crop than in the first crop. Persistent residues of aldrin and heptachlor were detected in asparagus shortly after application of these pesticides to the soil; residues of the BHC group of organochlorines were present in almost all fish and shellfish; DDT and its metabolites were found in pork samples analyzed in the study. Compost was found to be a source of mercury contamination of mushrooms. Further studies on fish toxicity, rates of pesticide degradation, and phytotoxicity to non-target crops of currently used pesticide and pesticides being considered for registration are carried out
