Towards a new role for the agricultural sector in economic development strategies: general ideas and proposals for action

The document summarizes some of the ideas and initiatives that have been developed on the basis of the Ottawa Declaration, as well as the possibilities for implementing them. The activities of IICA, and possible areas for cooperation between IICA and the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) are pointed out. Sections II and III present some ideas on the economic situation and its relationship with agriculture during the 1980s, and also discuss the main ideas concerning the role the sector might play in promoting economic reactivation and development. Section IV presents some suggestions on action that should be taken and on the potential contribution of the financial and technical cooperation agencies to the modernization of agriculture. Finally, section V presents some general conclusions. (MIBA)
