Biotechnology research, development and training at the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies

A characteristic of the tropics is the great diversity in the genetic resources yet to be gainfully exploited. Reference is made to a biotechnology programme at the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies which includes training and research into micropropagation and crop improvement. In conjunction with the Cocoa Research Unit, a project is in progress which seeks to achieve in vitro propagation of clonal cocoa material, in vitro conservation of germplasm, and cryopreservation of cocoa germplasm. Current lines of investigation are presented which, along with those proposed in the Faculties of Agriculture and Natural Sciencies, seek to address the problems of food security in the countries of the region.
