Remarks from IICA

The paper highlights biotechnology as a tool for agricultural development, as it offers developing countries a chance to create and control variability; to conserve and exchange germplasm; as well as to diagnose plant diseases and breed pathogen-free plants. It emphasizes that the region is rich in genetic resources, which must be protected and enhanced. Cocoa collections in Trinidad and Tobago are excellent models of what must be done to conserve genetic resources. (MIBA)
