Beekeepuig in Saint Lucia

Background information on Saint Lucia, the status of beekeeping industry, the market of the honey, and problems and constraints is presented. Some beekeepers have experienced problems when trying to import queen bees. The island is presently free of all diseases and parasites that plague other beekeepers in most areas of the bee world today. The greatest constraint to honey production is the limited and declining amount of bee pasture, which has been recognised and the Forestry Department is making an effort to have nectar-producing nursery stock available for bee farmers to plant. The potential for a successful beekeeping programme on Saint Lucia is recognized, and that once sufficient bee pasture is established and the beekeeper becomes trained in modern beekeeping methods and techniques the programme will be assured of success.
