Cadmium newsletter

With the arrival of the last quarter of our CRC-MOCCA alliance collaboration, we are pleased to present the fifth issue of the Cd bulletin. So far, each issue has reached 27 partner MOCCA institutions, its network of over 500 stakeholders in the national, regional, and international spheres even going beyond the MOCCA geographies. This set of Cd bulletins has contributed to raising awareness and knowledge about Cd and providing the latest research results in a simple way for those who are looking to get advice on Cd mitigation for their cacao farms. A lot has happened in the Cd front during the first quarter of 2021, while as a region we have been continuing the battle against the ravages of COVID-19 and dealing with its aftermath. The MOCCA project is providing technical and financial support to assist target countries execute activities implemented towards understanding and mitigating the Cd problem. In addition, the MOCCA project conducted proficiency testing of eight accredited laboratories for Cd analysis and identified laboratories that provide accurate and reliable results in a cost-effective manner. There were also major strides in the research arena, with new research on Cd mitigation emerging and a comprehensive review of the process of transfer of Cd from soil to the chocolate bar being published. As the CRC-MOCCA alliance moves into its last quarter we are optimistic that the region would have made considerable strides in cadmium mapping, understanding the factors that contribute to the problem and would have learnt tremendously from each other around Cd mitigation.
