The use of simple biotechnogical tools to facilitate plantain breeding

Plantains are a staple food crop in sub-Saharan Africa. Black sigatoka, a leaf spot disease, is the principal cause of current yield losses. Only 3 years after is inception, the plantain breeding programme at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has produced four black sigatoka-resistant plantain hybrids by crossing the triploid plantains with a wild diploid. A few simple biotechnological tools, such as introduction of germplasm through in vitro meristem culture, in vitro micropropagation, and embryo rescue culture, were pivotal in this achievement
