The steady state-succession interaction, an example: the coastal vegetation of the State of Yucatan, Mexico
The importance is emphasized of the steady state-succession interaction on the maintenance of the coastal vegetation of Yucatan. The different communities form a gradient beginning at the seashore, and progressing inland with the following sequence:dune vegetation (pioneers), dune vegetation (shrubs or matorral), mangrove forest (mangal) and low seasonal forest (selva baja espinosa). The most diverse community is the seasonal forest, and the least, the mangal. The highest species similarity is between both dune systems, and the lowest is between the seasonal forest and the mangal. It is concluded that the constant immersion of the Yucatan platform is the generator that maintains the different plant communities.
