Floral and fruiting phenology of trees in a mangrove forest on the dry Pacific coast of Costa Rica
The reproductive phenology of four species of mangroves (Avicennia bicolor, A. germinans, Rhizophora racemosa and Laguncularia racemosa) is described, based on observations made in the Tivives mangrove forest from August 1983 to December 1987. A clear relation was found between the water balance of the study site and flowering and fruiting peaks. All the species analysed shed their fruits during the rainy season when water levels within the forest were maximum. Fruit production in Avicennia bicolor forests in some years exceeded three million fruits per hectare. Avicennia species showed a temporal displacement of their reproductive events.
