Some aspects of the reproductive biology of Schomburgkia tibicinis Batem (Orchidaceae) in Yucatan, Mexico

Schomburgkia tibicinis flowers, growing at a site in Yucatan, Mexico, produced nectar on the tip of the growing peduncle, on the buds and on the base of the floral pedicel, but no intrafloral nectar was detected. Pollination was accomplished by Eulaema polychroma bees just after sunrise when floral odour was very perceptible. Fruit set was low (0.02 fruits per flower). Better fruit set (0.67-0.92 fruits per flower) was achieved with hand pollination. S. tibicinus produced fruit when self-pollinated and cross-pollinated. The low natural level of fruit set may result from pollinator limitation. Because the flowers were unrewarding, only newly emerged, naive bees were attracted to them.
