Ornamental flora from local markets (tianguis) in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico
Field inquiries in outdoor and permanent markets over a year in Xalapa, Veracruz revealed a total of 253 plant species were being sold. After consulting bibliographical information, these species represented 194 genera and 76 different families. Of the plants, 81.8 percent were used for exterior and 18.2 percent for interior ornamental purposes. The Compositae (10.2 percent), Araceae (13.9 percent), Liliaceae (15.7 percent), Cactaceae (25.9 percent) and Orchidaceae (34.3 percent) were the most abundant families. Local orchids were the most common family sold in Xalapa, represented by Epidendrum (3 species), Oncidium (4 species) and Encyclia (5 species).
