Artificial insemination in goats with frozen semen in Norway

A.I. in goat breeding with frozen semen has been used since 1972. The semen is centrifuged and rediluted to 60 million sperm per insemination dose in a 0.25 ml straw. Using an intrauterine insemination technique, conception rates (based on kidding results) after one insemination was 59.3 percent in 1979 and 66.2 percent in 1980. Insemination work was performed by 27 inseminators in 1979 and 21 in 1980. Inseminators which inseminated more than 30 goats per season had a higher conception rate than those which inseminated less than 30 does (63.9 percent vs 52.9 percent in 1979 and 70.8 percent vs 51.0 percent in 1980). Type of semen extender (tris vs milk) had little effect on conception rate (68.9 percent vs 67.4 percent)
