The products of the goat industry are varied and include meat, milk, skins, mohair, cashmere and hair. This paper deals mainly with goat meat and milk production. During the 1961-65 period the average annual production of goat meat and milk were 1 326 000 and 7 166 000 tons, respectively. These figures represent the total production of 371.6 million heads of goats. In 1979 the total world goat production increased to 445.9 million head which produced 1 892 000 tons of meat and 7 236 000 tons of milk. It is interesting to note that during this period of about 16 years, the world goat numbers increased by 20 percent, and the goat meat production by 42 percent, while the goat milk production remained nearly the same. The average contribution of the goat sector to the food basket was 2.1 kg of meat and 13.2 kg of milk per capita . The supply of goat milk to the food basket was lowest with 1.0 kg/year in China and the highest with 30.0 kg/year per capita in Sudan
