La etnobotánica como una herramienta para orientar la diversificación del manejo sostenible de los bosques tropicales: el caso Teribe

To impel rural development which is compatible with natural resource conservation in four communities of the Teribe area in Bocas del Toro, Panama, improvements, including the incorporation of useful native species to its production systems, were proposed. The study used ethnobotany to identify those species which were considered to be useful and to give them a use value, which constitutes part of the basic information for the selection process of species to be incorporated into agro-systems to be improved, especially the productive forest. The information required for this process was generated in four stages: identification of plant communities and their floristic composition, an ethnobotanical study, diagnosis of local demand for plant resources, and identification of commercial species in the province. The selection method defined characteristics that the species should have in accordance with the objectives of improvement of each agro-system, evaluation variables and selection criteria. The application of this method then allowed us to prioritize the community's interest for these species.
