Participación de las familias rurales en los procesos de capacitación y sus conocimientos sobre plagas y plaguicidas
Fifty-four women and forty-six men from 6 rural communities in northern Nicaragua were interviewed to determine their participation in IPM training activities and to asses the impact of training on their knowledge of pests and pesticides. Most women did not participate in training, whereas most men did. Factors like "lack of invitation" and "lack of time" were mentioned frequently to explain non-participation. Women belonging to collective farms and men involved in cash crops participated more in training. Among men and women who did not participate in training, men tend to have better knowledge of pests and pesticides than women. However, when they are involved in training, their knowledge levels reach similar levels. Through training both men and women extend their knowledge on different aspects of pests and pesticides, depending on their roles and interests in the production and decision making process.
