Characteristics of coffee processing waste water
A study to evaluate the pollution potentially of coffee processing waste-water, its characteristics and preliminary handling techniques had been conducted at three states located in Java in 1991 and 1992. The results showed that the pollution potentially of coffee processing wastes is due to the high production of liquid waste from pulping, fermentation, and washing stages, which is aproximately 20 m 3 liquid waste per tonne of dried coffee bean. The coffee liquid waste consist of exessive suspended organic matters, which tend to naturally reduce the level of dissolve oxygen, produce foul odour (putrefaction), and darker colour of the discarded water. Evaluation results of the existing handling techniques show that eventhough the physical treatments in the stabilization pond reduce the suspended organic matters as shown by the decreasing of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) value, but the level of Dissolved Oxigen (DO-value) and pH-value were beyond the suitable level. The utilization of coffee liquid waste for "watering" coffee seedling has a promising result since the treatment does not only reduce the pollution potentially to the surrounding environment, but also contributes the requirement of water and organic fertilization of coffee seedling.
