Challenges in dryland agriculture: a global perspective. Proceedings

Examples are given of knowledge application in pastoral areas (stocking rates, improved forage resources, watering points, ranching, upgrading of livestock and improved support services) and in mixed farming areas (new varieties, improved husbandry, use of fertilizers, water harvesting, soil conservation programmes). Community participation and a better understanding of local conditions and institutions are considered key factors for more successfull transfer of knowledge to dryland farmers
