Morphology and Anatomy of Leaves, Stems and Roots from Smallanthus siegesbeckius (Heliantheae, Asteraceae)
Mercado, M. I.; M. V. Coll Aráoz; A. Grau & G. I. Ponessa. 2009. Morphology and Anatomy of Leaves, Stems and Roots from Smallanthus siegesbeckius (Heliantheae, Asteraceae). Lilloa 46 (1-2). S. siegesbeckius commonly known as “yarita” is a native species from Perú, Brasil, Bolivia and Paraguay, closely related to Smallanthus sonchifolius, “yacon”, a crop with medicinal and agroindustrial importance. S. siegesbeckius presents leaves with strong antioxidant activity and tuberous roots with pharmacologically active compounds. The following diagnostic features allow it identification among other related species: leaves with triangular deltoid symmetry and sharp curved apex; shoots with high glandular trichomes density, two and four-head glandular trichomes, eglandular trichomes on cells cushion, less developed parenchymatic cortex, amyliferous parenchyma ring associated to the vascular system and collenchymatic caps on the phloem. Roots present secondary xylem with rays and abundant secretory canals over the endodermis
