Towards work centred education: a programme of socially useful productive work in education

The revised primary school curriculum and secondary school curriculum of the 10-year school in India stress the importance of work experience programmes as a means to achieve community education - First advocated by Gandhi, then recommended by the Education Commission in 64-66, the concept of education through work has been again put forward by the 1977 Review Committee. It is now a compulsory subject for examinations. It aims at personality development through understanding of others, tolerance, cooperation, team work, self-reliance and work education. Various integrated activities can be conducted on the school ground, but community study and use of community resources are also important aspects which entail close school community cooperation.
