Innovation in in-service education and training of teachers: Italy

Study on inservice teacher education in Italy regarding the teacher role as an important factor in educational innovations and consequently stressing the need of lifelong education for teachers - Although the legislative provisions for inservice education for teachers date back to 1928 the typical Italian teacher tends to be resistant to change. While the old notion of refresher training aimed at improving the teacher's ability to use traditional forms of transmission of knowledge, the Organisation for Teacher Training (O.P.P.I.) established in 1965 has tried to center its educational programmes for preservice teacher education as well as inservice teacher education on the assimilation of knowledge. The teacher should become a trainer in the learning process. This means that he has to learn research methodology, in particular problem solving and utilization of resources.
