A progress report
This project was finally planned at a workshop held at the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia in November 1995. On that occasion, the objectives, approach, methodology and coordination were finalised by the partners and the Science Advisory Group (SAG). The papers to the present workshop, describing the progress at individual sites, illustrate that the partners have implemented the plan in two years on a broad range of sites representative of plantation forestry in the tropics. While each site is designed as a self-contained study, the linkages within the network will enhance the value of the results to all partners. This summary of the location and enviromnent of the sites and the data collected indicates that a robust network has been established. Linkages between the sites and between scientists are being developed to better understand the science and the basic processes that influence productivity of tropical forest plantations.
