Getting the numbers right

Statistics. You cannot get very far in today s world without statistics, but to get anywhere you have to be sure they are available, accessible and reliable. Two regional workshops have recently addressed the specific needs of researchers in agricultural institutions in terms of the collection, processing and analysis of statistics. In April 2001, 17 researchers from seven francophone countries in West and Central Africa attended a week s course in Cotonou, Benin, whilst 19 East African researchers from seven countries, came together in Dar es salaam, Tanzania, in August 2001. These workshops are part of a long-term CTA programme to strengthen institutional skills in biometrics (the statistical analysis of biological data) in ACP countries, a process started with a study and a workshop in the mid-1990 s. Hohenheim, 1996: Strengthening biometry and statistics in agricultural research. CTA, 1997. 173 pp. ISBN 92 9081 1676 CTA number 850. 20 credit points
