Forage strategy of juvenile Lates niloticus (L.) in Lake Victoria, Kenya.

The shrimp Caridina nilotica (Roux) is now the dominant prey for juvenile Lates niloticus (L.) in Lake Victoria, Kenya. Juveniles feed on zooplankton when 1-2 cm TL and switch to C. nilotica by 3 cm. Depth may affect diet, with fish in the shallows feeding on small fish, while in deeper waters they prey on C. nilotica. Further studies are underway into the predator/prey size relationship.
