Cytochemistry of pollen development in Paracoffea
Cytochemical aspects of pollen development in a few species of the section Paracoffea of the genus Coffea L (viz. Coffea bengalensis, C. wightiana and C. travencorensis) were brought out in detail. Anther development in these species conforms to the basic type. Tapetum is secretory. Endothecium completely surrounds the anther locule. Meiosis and simultaneous cytokinesis in the microspore mother cells give rise to tetrahedral, isobilateral and decussate pollen tetrads. Coupled with these primitive entogenetic features is the presence of starchless pollen in C. travencorensis indicating a relatively advanced evolutionary status for Paracoffea in the genus. Cytochemical study of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids provided a preliminary insight into the developmental physiology of pollen
