Petalody - a floral abnormality in Africa (Coffea arabica L.) coffee

As coffee is grown for seed, normal flowering and fruit set are vital for obtaining optimum yields. Flower abnormalities such as "Star flowering" occurring due to some external and internal factors are found to affect the normal fruitset and thereby reduce the yields. (At CCRI, some plants in older selections of C. arabica L., were found to show the incidence of "Petalody", in which the stamen are transformed into petal like structures. Fruitset and retention were found to be quite low under this condition. In the present article, the distinct morphological features of "Petaloid" flowers are described and their influence on fruit set and retention is reported
