The reaction of some coffee cultivars to natural infection by the coffee leaf rust pathogen :

The incidence of coffee leaf rust disease (Hemileia vastatrix) in Ghana on Robusta and Arabica coffee was estimated by noting the number of diseased branches per tree with the whole plant as a reading unit. Of the six Arabica types maintained in a coffee museum at Tafo, the susceptibility rating as determined by their infection indices were Ara 2 (73.3 per cent) and Ara 6 (66.6 per cent), Ara 4 (58.3 per cent), Ara 5 (53.7 per cent), Ara 3 (38.8 per cent) and Ara 1 (23.9 per cent). The corresponding infection index for a Robusta type on a plot lying between two Arabica plots was 10.4 per cent. Leaf rust ratings at Suhuma (Western Region) and Bibiani (Ashanti) on Robusta coffee were 69.8 per cent and 42.2 per cent respectively. These results indicate that coffee leaf rust disease could be very serious in Ghana on both Arabica and Robusta coffees. The existing Arabica and Robusta coffee germplasms were susceptible to the disease. Differences in the susceptibility of the Robusta coffee at Tafo (Eastern Region), Suhuma and Bibiani could be attributed to either the heterogeneity of the Robusta coffee types being cultivated in Ghana, the existence of physiological races of Hemileia vastatrix or ecological differences, particularly weather, prevailing at the three places where the plots were sited
