Reaction of cocoa cultivars to canker caused by Phytophthora palmivora, in Fiji

The susceptibility of cocoa cultivars in Fiji canker was assessed by stem inoculations with Phytophthora palmivora and field observations of natural infection. In general, susceptibility as judged by lesion lenght following inoculation was related to severity of natural infection, although some clones were anomalous in this respect. Methods of assessing canker susceptibility are discussed.
