Comparative studies of different Phytophthora palmivora isolates

Due to a severe incidence of black pod rot on the cacao cultivar "Catongo", previously found highly resistant, morphological and culture studies were carried out on 12 isolates of Phytophthora palmivora, of which three had been isolated from "Catongo" pods. The culture media used were corn meal agar, soybean agar, potato dextrose agar peptonized, malt extract agar, and cacao fruit decoction agar. The cultures obtained from mono-zoosporic isolations showed variable growth rates in Petri dishes containing 15 ml of each medium. The isolate C-6 presented a different type of colony and growth rate on some media. The microscopic studies of the isolates showed significant variations in the mean dimension of mycelium, in the average size of sporangia and also in the production of sporangia and chlamydospores. The isolates C-6 (isolated from the trunk of cocoa "Comum") and I-21 (isolated from "Catongo" pods) had larger diameter mycelium, and the latter formed big sporangia
