Leachates from the pod wall of Theobroma cacao

Rain drops and dew from the surface of cacao pods were analised for sugars, amino acids and phenols. The sugars present were glucose, fructose, sucrose and some unidentified sugars. Alanine was the only amino acid definitely identified but glycine, glutamic acid, threonine and histidine were tentatively located. A polyphenol glycoside spot was also found to be present. A mechanism for resistance in cacao has not yet been formulated but these groups of compounds are implicated in resistance studies with other crops
