Comparaison de deux méthodes d'établissement de cacaoyers selectionnés en Cote d'Ivoire et leur influence sur la productivité, les pertes par pourriture brune et la précision des essais

With the development of new techniques in growing cacao, new methods of establishment are necessary. Two methods of establishment are described, managed forest and natural regrowth and their advantages and disadvantages compared. Establishment under natural regrowth presents two problems: - the cost of land preparation is high (500 to 700 man days per hectare compared with 200 to 300 under managed forest) - entomological problems are more severe. Results to date show: (1) yield (a) Clonal trials. Mean of 4 years yields of 4 clones was four times as high in full light. With mature trees the yield without shade is 2.8 times the yield with shade. (b) Hybrid trials. With hybrids, an increase of 50 percent was found in absence of shade. Mean yields have reached 2.5 tons of dry cacao hectare. (2) Losses from Black Pod. Black pod losses remain less than 20 percent even with a rainfall of 2.000 mm in hybrids grown without shade. (3) Experimental precision. Co-efficients of variations are reduced by 70 percent by removing shade. In conclusion, the balance of the comparison of the two methods lies in favour of natural regrowth. Further studies are being carried out on the economics of the system
