Assessment of WACRI Series I and II varieties of cocoa in Nigeria, 1: Establishment and yield

In trials of WACRI Series I and II progenies in Nigeria, none of the progenies were significantly inferior, and many were superior to F3 Amazon in establishment ability. Over the first 6 years of bearing, Series II progenies outyielded F3 Amazon by an average of 165,2 kg/ha per year, while the best individual variety (Series II H) was superior by 367,3 kg/ha. Series I progenies were inferior to those of Series II, but Series I progenies A and K outyielded F3 Amazon. The reason for the superiority of the Series II over Series I is discussed. It is concluded that mixed Series II progenies constitute a more promising general-purpose variety than F3 Amazon which, up to 1960's, was the best available in Nigeria and Ghana
