The symbolic and ethical dimensions of the biosphere reserve concept
The biosphere reserve concept is a comprehensive ideal of planetary co-evolution. In order for this potential to be realized, the concept must be expressed in adequate symbolic and moral languages. Two kinds jof value-laden language are found to be present in the biosphere reserve literature--resource management and community. Each is analyzed in terms of its basic symbolic and ethical dimensions and evaluated in terms of its capacity to express the fundamental visi8on of the biosphere reserves and provide moral guidance for conservation efforts in the contemporary global situation. It is concluded that the moral language of community is the most authentic basis for expressing the symbolism and ethics of the biosphere reserve concept, and it is recommended that this priority be made explicit.
