Uma análise de prioridades em conservacao da natureza na Amazonia

The study objectives were: (1) To synthesize the published works of various Amazon specialist into a common format from which biological significan nature conservation priorities could be determined; (2) To identify and locate existing and planned nature conservation units in the Amazon; (3) To analyze potential compatibilities between the POLAMAZONIA priority development polesand the preservation of key areas; 4) To propose a general outline of a Amazon nature conservation program which gives fue consideration to he deiversity of the region; and (5) To permit those public agencies responsible for nature conservation to gain an offensive position from which an Amazon conservation policy could be actively pursued. A three layered hierarchy of conservation priorities was developed, based on a comparative analysis of proposed Pleistocene refuges for birds, plants, butterflies, and lizards; and, on known vegetation formulations within the Amazon rain forest. A recommendation was made to establish a network of Amazon parks and reserves with emphasis on thirty key ateas identified in the study. The document was distributed to appropriate scientific and planning institutions to obtain critical suggestions and feedback for incorporation into Brazil's National Park System Plan.
