Legislation for biosphere reserves: The Indian experience

Recognizing the special needs of biosphere reserves, India has made pioneering efforts to develop legislation specifically for biosphere reserves. This paper traces the development of the Indian experience and highlights major elements of the resulting draft legislation that India currently has under consideration. The paper provides suggestions for other countries deliberating the question of long-term legal protection for biosphere reserves.
