National, bilateral and multilateral agroforestry projects in Central and South America
Agroforestry has been used by indigenous populations in Latin America for several centuries. Various types of agroforestry systems are being used in Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Surinam and Venezuela. A large research programme at CATIE in Costa Rica includes studies of Alnus acuminata in pasture, Cordia alliodora and other species in coffee and cocoa plantations, the establishment of forest plantations through the use of the taungya system, live fence posts, windbreaks, sequential cropping involving trees and case studies of existing systems. Priority in research should be given to the evaluation and modification of successful traditional agroforestry techniques. More effort is also required on information and communication, education and training, and on the dissemination of germ plasm.
