Developments in the control of Striga in the USA

Tremendous strides have been made in understanding the biology of Striga since this parasitic pest was first found in the United States in 1956. A strict quarantine and regulatory programme has confined the infestation to its original site while the development of a herbicide programme and the utilisation of suitable agronomic practices has reduced the population to a manageable level. The discovery and development of an artificial seed-germination stimulant permits a rapid depletion of seeds in the soil. These developments have led to the initiation of an effort to eradicate this pest in the USA that should be successful in the foreseeable future
