Safety regulations in use of pesticides in Taiwan

For the protection of public health against the possible toxic hazard from pesticide residues in food, a simple method of establishing residue tolerances based mainly on toxicology and in consideration of local conditions is suggested. The harvest time for treated crops is evaluated on the basis of a dissipation curve for pesticide residues after the last treatment and in the light of their tolerances. Temporary tolerances can be first calculated by a proposed arbitrary equation using the acceptable daily intake (ADI) values of FAO/WHO or obtained from the correlation of U.S. tolerances and the ADI, daily food consumption, the percentage of food treated, and the percentage of a pesticide used on each group of crops. Final tolerances are established after further studies on residues in commercial fields, in food markets, and in prepared food. In the use of this method for establishing tolerances, the only experimental data needed are local dissipation rates for each pesticide on treated crops. Other data can be obtained either from basic manufacturers or from published or unpublished statistics
