Cooperative pest control in paddy fields of Taiwan
Cooperative pest control for rice in Taiwan started in 1961 and has since then been successfully implemented. Demonstrations comparing the effectiveness of pest control by team operation and control done on individual farm basis were initially organized in 10 townships. In 1968, a total of 2,399 teams were organized in 303 townships. A cooperative pest control team consist of 50 or more farmers in adjoining rice fields covering from 50-100 hectares, with a team leader coordinating all the activities. Organized extension methods such as short training courses and night/daytime classes for both extension workers and farmers are conducted to increase their level of knowledge of rice pests and assure of a successful implementation of the program. Aerial pesticide application is used to control highly transmissible and most destructive rice pests such as rice blast, vectors of virus or virus-like diseases and stem borer. A rice pest forecasting system has been organized to help the control teams in the proper timing of pesticide application
