Cryptocotyly in various tropical dicotyledons
An investigation of the seeds and seedlings of Eugenia stipitata, Melicoccus bijugatus and Virola sebifera showed that they are all species with cryptocotylar seedlings. However, E. stipitata and M. bijugatus are epigeous, while V. sebifera has hypogeal germination. All 3 species have hard sclerenchymatous seed coats, but each has additional factors related to cryptocotyly: E. stipitata has a bent embryo with conferruminate, planoconvex, gamophyllous cotyledons; M. bijugatus has a bent embryo with broad thick cotyledons; and V. sebifera has a large ruminate endosperm and a small capitate embryo with haustorial cotyledons which remain inside the seed coat.
