The outlook for trade in agricultural commodities

This paper uses a set of econometric models to analyze future prospects of international trade for eight agricultural commodities under a common set of assumptions used by the three groups of modelers in this session and under the assumption that the conditions currently governing trade remain virtually unchanged. These results provide a control solution against which to assess the effects of three alternative policy initiatives: macroeconomic policy changes in the industrialized countries, trade liberalization, and strategic trade policies in exporting countries. The results suggest that these mechanisms could provide a realistic and viable means to expand agricultural commodity trade
