A United Nations voluntary alliance, the Mountain Partnership (MP) is dedicated to improving the lives of mountain peoples and protecting mountain environments around the world. Founded in 2002, the Mountain Partnership promotes the sharing of resources, knowledge, information and expertise to carry out its mission. At the end of 2015, the Partnership had 266 members: 56 governments, 14 intergovernmental organizations, 191 major groups (e.g. civil society, NGOs and the private sector) and 5 subnational authorities. The MP is supported by a Secretariat, which is hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, Italy, and is guided by a 16-member Steering Committee.
