Palynological contributions of eleven varieties of Citrus (Rutaceae) grown in Tucumán (Argentina)

García María E.; Nora J. F. Reyes; María L. Espeche. 2015. “Palynological contributions of eleven varieties of Citrus (Rutaceae) grown in Tucumán (Argentina)”. Lilloa 52 (1). The Citrus genus belongs to the Aurantioideae subfamily (Rutaceae) and includes numerous species of agricultural and ornamental importance. In order to contribute to the knowledge of this genus, the pollen morphology of eleven varieties of Citrus grown in the province is studied: Citrus aurantium L. (“naranjo agrio”); C. jambhiri Lush (“limón rugoso”); C. limon (L.) Burm.f. (“limoneros” var. Eureka, Génova, Limoneira and Lisboa); C. reshni Hor t ex Tan (“mandarino” Cleopatra); C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck (“naranjo dulce”, “naranja tangerina” and “naranja Valencia”) and C. unshiu Marcovitch (“mandarino” Satsuma). Samples were obtained from fresh material from collections made in city streets and a farm of the Depar tment Tafí Viejo. The material was processed according to conventional techniques for acetolysis and natural pollen. Photos level Optical Microscopy (OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were taken. Grains are isopolar, radially symmetric and medium size, 30 to 45 µm on acetolyzed grains and 24 to 37 µm on natural ones. The various shape of oblate-esferoidal to prolate-esferoidal both in the natural as acetolized state. Scope is round, square or pentagonal according to the number of openings. They can vary from tricolporate to pentacolporate, finding combinations of 3 and 4; 4 and 5 or 3, 4 and 5 in different proportions for each species. Colpi are short; lalongate endoaperture. Exine 2 to 4 µm thick, sexine as thick as nexine; reticulate heterobrochate surface, brochi decreasing in size towards the poles. The variability was highlighted in the number of intraspecific and interspecific openings and reticulated or perforated exine ornamentation.
