MITOS EN TORNO AL MACIZO DEL ÁVILA Y A LA CIUDAD DE CARACAS. LA INFORMACIÓN EN TIEMPOS DE DESASTRES
El presente trabajo aborda hechos distorsionados por algunos medios de comunicación y rumores sin fundamento, alrededor del fenómeno hidrometereológico extremo del mes de diciembre de 1999. En el mismo se muestran titulares exagerados, argumentos sesgados, declaraciones de presuntos profesionales con enfoques carentes de racionalidad y conceptos poco felices en cuanto a tópicos geológicos se refiere. Como contrapartida, se presentan referencias históricas y sus autores, en las que se refutan las afirmaciones realizadas en la prensa nacional consultada de los días posteriores al evento e incluso a un año del mismo. Exploradores científicos como, J. B. Boussingault y K. Moritz entre otros, integran para el siglo XIX el grupo de estudiosos de la parte central de la Cordillera de la Costa, de acuerdo a su área de interés. Igualmente, es mencionado Eduardo Röhl y su crónica de los diluvios, una de las evidencias fieles de la falsa acreditación del alud a eventos como un sismo y la amenaza al estado Vargas y la ciudad de Caracas. Como complemento se aclaran hechos de trascendencia, producto de investigaciones en el campo geológico, sismológico y geotérmico.ABSTRACTMyths about the Ávila massif and the city of Caracas, Venezuela. The information in times of disaster.This paper approaches distorted or unfounded facts and rumors transmitted by the mass media, around the extreme hydrometereological phenomena of December 1999. Exaggerated holders, slanted arguments, approaches of presumed professionals devoid of rationality and unhappy geological concepts are shown. Likewise, historical references and their authors appear, in whom the affirmations made in the consulted national press of the later days to the event and to a year are even refuted of the same one. Scientific explorers like, J. B. Boussingault and K. Moritz among others, are some of the XIX century scholars of the Venezuelan Coast Range, according to their area of interest. Also, Eduardo Röhl and his chronicle of deluges is mentioned, one of the faithful evidences of the false accreditation of the avalanche to events as an earthquake and the threat to the state Vargas and the city of Caracas. As complement some facts are clarified, product of research in the geologic, seismologic and geothermal field.
