Associated environmental factors and determination methods for somatic cell in the milk tank

In order to analyze the main environmental factors associated with the milk production systems and the somatic cell count (SCC) in tank and, compare the effect of the four analysis methods for the determination of somatic cells, a field trial was conducted in 30 herds with different management conditions in Valle del Cauca (Colombia). The test was carried out in four periods, the effect of the sampling period (periods), type of milking, high or low altitude, implementation of good livestock practices, racial component, feeding with poultry dregs, total pathogen count and total cows number were evaluated for the SCC. Multivariate analysis was carried out for environmental variables and specific tests to differentiate the four diagnostic methods (Direct Cell Counter, Ekomilk Scan, Portacheck and Fossomatic), the comparison capacity against the standard test and the possibilities of mathematical adjustments to evaluate discrimination criteria, finally the ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) analysis was used, It is concluded that there are environmental factors that affect the SCC; the tests show significant differences between them; at the level of precision compared to the witness test.
