Composición florística de dos bosques (Tierra firme y varzea) en la región de Araracuara, Amazonia Colombiana

Two rain forests of the Araracuara region (Colombian Amazon) are described and compared in terms of vascular terrestrial plant composition. Two 1.8 ha rectangular plots, located in upland (tierra firme) and seasonally flooded (várzea) sites, were sampled for individuals taller than 0.5 m. A total of 1149 species, 347 genera and 98 families were found. Arborescent species comprised 65% of the total at both sites; climbers (woody and herbaceous) contributed 24%, shrubs 8% and terrestrial herbs 3%. The number of species was greater in tierra firme forest (698; than in the várzea (511); the number of genera was nearly the same (236 and 235, respectively), whereas the number of families was slightly higher in the várzea forest (84) than in the uplands 432 (80). Similarities between the two forests were high at a family level (67% in cornmon). intermediate at a generic level (36% in common), and very low among species (only 5% in common). In terms of growth habits, major differences were related to herbaceous taxa (including climbers and terrestrials) with more species found in the várzea than in the uplands (12% and 7% respectively). Compare with other Amazonian and Neotropical local floras, Araracuara shows marked similarities with the region of Manaus (central Amazonia).
